PTI Motion by DAP

Dear all!,

Some of you have criticised Sabah MPs for not supporting the opposition motion on PTI today in the Parliament. Some of you said that Sabah MPs have failed to raise Sabah issues in Parliament.

If you all care to read the Parliament hansard, you would read that all MPs from Sabah have spoken about PTI issue. Everyone of us have the passion to solve this issue. Even YB Kalabakan whom was said to be the brave one in parliament, did not agree with the usul! That goes to PBS,UPKO, SAPP, LDP and PBRS!!

Actually there is nothing wrong or unusual about this. This is because of the whip system. All Government MPs are not allowed to support Opposition's motion. And I am sure, opposition MPs are also subjected to their own house rules. For example, many programs suggested by the government are good initiatives but the opposition will jump on any opportunity to ridicule and oppose the programs just because they were pembangkang.

For your info, MPs Sabah have different view on how to solve the PTI issue. It does not necessarily require Suruhanjaya DiRaja. Perhaps a high level government committee or Parliamentary Committee comprising prominent figures in and out of the government and Sabah MPs, is more practical and more suited for our needs. In addition, the terms of reference must be dictated by the Sabah MPs themselves because they are at the forefont and know this issue by heart. In addition, if the terms of reference are not vetted by Sabah MPs, I am afraid the end results may not be what we wanted in the first place.

Wait for more announcements soon from Sabah BN Backbencher Club on this issue.

Salam,
DARD

  1. 1. Whips have too much power in our parliamentary system. Remember that the Westminster system we practice was not designed for political parties, but to elect individuals (parties only slowly came into being in the 18th century).

Whips, therefore, should NOT be considered absolute. It goes against the very notion of checks and balances, the principle of devolution of powers and the demands of a locally elected representative to represent local views.

    2. "For example, many programs suggested by the government are good initiatives but the opposition will jump on any opportunity to ridicule and oppose the programs just because they were pembangkang."

What's "good" is entirely subjective. I find it highly shallow to attribute all criticisms towards what you subjectively consider good as criticisms for criticisms' sake. Remember, Subjective.

You also mention that Sabah MPs have always been vocal about the PTI issue.

At the same time, you mention how Sabah MPs have different views on the solution.

Does that mean that the PTI problem has not been solved because Sabah MPs have never been able to reach a consensus? in all these years of raising the problem in Parliament?

A high-level committee is undesirable as it only involves the Executive branch of the Federal government, which will inevitably be partisan.

A parliamentary committee MUST be bipartisan, and I must say that BN has not been a keen fan of bipartisanship.

THAT is why a royal commission is so attractive.

    cheers

  4. Saudara yang di Hurmati;

Kenapa kita disini lain. Adakah politik kita berbeza????Maaf saya bukan orang politik.

  7. Even in he Westminister Parliament system, there have been instances when MPs have voted against the whip. If we are passionate enough and believe in our cause, no whip can stop us - u are only answerable to the people who voted u in, not the whip. We have experience with the Parliament Select committee - they din't work!
